The town of Washington, California was founding in 1849, during the height of the Gold Rush Days
Located near the South Yuba River in the ruggedly, beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Washington Elementary School was built in 1905, for students in Kindergarten through eighth grades.
A plaque, dedicated at the school’s centennial celebration, reads:
Washington Elementary School
100 years of uninterrupted use as a California Public School
Having survived fires, floods, wars, time and politics.
This school has been doing its part to ensure the rights of American Children
to receive a basic education.
